Pediatrician Tips: Observing and Managing Fever in Babies

pediatrician Houston, TX

There are many reasons the pediatrician would want to see your baby. The doctor can diagnose and treat a variety of conditions in even the youngest patient. The doctor will also advise parents on ways they can care for the baby at home. Some symptoms of conditions, such as fevers, can get worse without proper care. Learn how to control the symptoms and restore your child’s health.

Description of fevers

A fever is not an illness; it is a symptom of another illness. It is the body’s way of combatting an infection. Mild fevers should not be a major cause for concern. However, as temperatures rise, complications can occur. This is especially true with babies.

Causes of fevers

People of all ages can get fevers, but this symptom is common among young children and babies. When it comes to newborns and babies, there are a few culprits that a pediatrician will often see. Ear infections are among the most common causes. Fevers can also follow or accompany other illnesses such as colds, pneumonia and the flu. Parents whose babies have throat infections or respiratory problems may also get fevers.

Initial monitoring

When a baby first shows signs of a fever, the pediatrician will likely recommend keeping a close eye on the young child. Parents should monitor how active the baby is. If the baby appears content, treatment may not be necessary. Parents should properly hydrate the baby with regular feedings. Also, watch for signs of dehydration such as a lack of wet diapers.

At-home care

If possible, a baby with a fever should not leave the house. Parents should keep the sick child away from public areas, especially those where other children may be. The pediatrician may suggest giving the baby pain medication. Make sure to give the child the correct dosage.

Making an appointment with the pediatrician

In some cases, parents may need to take the child to the doctor’s office for evaluation and treatment. If the baby lacks energy or does not respond to any calming techniques, a visit to the pediatrician is wise. Parents should also take the baby to see the doctor if the fever has lasted more than 24 hours or if it gets above 104 degrees. Also, if pain medication such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen is ineffective, the parents should go to the doctor’s office.

Emergency room care

If the symptoms are severe enough, the pediatrician may tell the parents to take the baby straight to the emergency room. This would be the case if the baby’s temperature climbs to 107 degrees or if the baby has a seizure. Newborns with fevers should go to the emergency room as well.

Get it under control

Though fevers are common, they are also serious results of any handful of illnesses. If you fail to treat the fever, it could lead to even more significant conditions. Your baby could even die without prompt, proper intervention. Keep these guidelines in mind so you will know when to see the pediatrician and how to react when your baby gets a fever.
